Research Summaries
Does Pilates work? What the research says
Condition-by-condition reviews of the published evidence on Pilates. Each page lists the trials, systematic reviews and guidelines one by one, links to every source, rates how strong the evidence is, and is honest about what it cannot yet tell you.
Reviewed 1 October 2026. The complete reference list behind every programme is in the Clinical Evidence Library; the headline numbers are in the statistics datasets.

Read the evidence →How we rate the evidence
- Strong — multiple randomised trials and/or systematic reviews point the same way, and major clinical guidelines agree.
- Moderate — several controlled trials support the effect, but sample sizes are modest or results vary between studies.
- Emerging — early trials and mechanistic evidence are encouraging, but high-quality Pilates-specific trials are still few.
- Limited — direct Pilates-specific evidence is thin; the case rests mainly on general exercise research and expert consensus.
We report effect sizes only as the original authors reported them, include null results where they exist, and never attribute a figure to a source that does not state it.
The numbers behind the conditions
- Pilates Statistics — Participation, growth, demographics, class prices and headline outcomes — the numbers behind the Pilates boom.
- Lower Back Pain Statistics — Prevalence, cost, recurrence and what guidelines say works for the world’s leading cause of disability.
- Sciatica Statistics — How common sciatica is, who it affects, how it behaves over time and the evidence for exercise-first care.
- Herniated Disc Statistics — Incidence, the surprisingly common painless herniation, spontaneous regression rates and surgery vs conservative outcomes.
- Neck Pain Statistics — Global burden, office-worker prevalence, recurrence and the case for strengthening over passive care.
- Scoliosis Statistics — Adolescent and adult prevalence, Cobb-angle thresholds, bracing outcomes and scoliosis-specific exercise evidence.
- Osteoporosis Statistics — Fracture risk after 50, hip-fracture consequences, diagnosis thresholds and the exercise consensus on bone health.
- Pelvic Floor Statistics — Incontinence and prolapse prevalence, postpartum figures and the strength of evidence for pelvic floor training.
- Diastasis Recti Statistics — How prevalent abdominal separation is in late pregnancy and at 6 and 12 months postpartum, and what closes it.
- GLP-1 / Ozempic & Exercise Statistics — Uptake of GLP-1 medication, lean-mass loss in the trials and why resistance-based movement matters during and after.
- Reformer Pilates Cost Statistics — Class prices in the US, UK and Singapore, machine prices and the break-even maths of buying versus a membership.
